Information on Commercial Workboat and Skipper Training Courses

Seatrek has established itself as the leader in Commercial Workboat Training throughout Scotland.

They offer commercial sector training packages that are designed for the individual company and are on hand for advice, working together with organisations such as MCA (Maritime Coastal Agency), HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and Local Councils, on your behalf. This ensures that you receive the correct advice and legislation at all times.

Alongside this we operate a school for the leisure industry who are able to develop their skills out on the water. We have a full comprehensive shorebased training itinerary to back this up. With sound knowledge it allows you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Clyde and West Coast Scotland and further afield.

The powerboat scheme commences with LEVEL 2, a basic boat handling and seamanship in a variety of craft, covering both planing and dispacement. The commercial industry are able to operate within 3 miles of land an not more than 3 miles radius from either point of departure or the seaward limit of categorised waters. (Daylight service only).

As student's gain experience they can undertake the following courses:

ADVANCE training, which will improve their skills, develop their handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation up to the standards required to drive a vessel safely by day and night in tidal coastal waters - allowing them to operate within 20 miles from a safe haven. Minimum requirement for categorised waters.

DAY SKIPPER allows a skipper to operate within 20 miles from a nominated departure point in favourable weather and daylight. They must have the Day Skipper theoretical knowledge prior to taking this training.

The RYA/DOT YACHTMASTER COASTAL SKIPPER (Motor) allows an operative to skipper a vessel within 20 miles of a safe haven and at night and up to 80 ton. This is a course for potential skippers and it is assumed that those attending it will be competent at helming with a good knowledge of the theory of navigation and meteorology, and will already have a level of experience approaching that required for the Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence.

The RYA/DOT YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE (Motor) allows a skipper to operate up to 60 miles from a safe haven and up to 200 ton. If accompanied by a Coastal Skipper (Motor) this increases to operate up to 150 miles from a safe haven. No syllabus is set out for a practical course for the Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate. However, we offer courses in preparation for this examanation, either to give candidates experience of making longer passages or simply as a refresher course on aspects of boat handling, navigation and seamanship.

N.B. Skippers will have to show medical fitness on application for commercial endorsement and relevant qualifications in other fields prior to examanation. Full information on these can be obtained by contacting us.
