Information on Commercial Workboat and Skipper Training Courses

Seatrek has established itself as the leader in Commercial Workboat Training throughout Scotland.

They offer commercial sector training packages that are designed for the individual company and are on hand for advice, working together with organisations such as MCA (Maritime Coastal Agency), HSE (Health and Safety Executive) and Local Councils, on your behalf. This ensures that you receive the correct advice and legislation at all times.

Alongside this we operate a school for the leisure industry who are able to develop their skills out on the water. We have a full comprehensive shorebased training itinerary to back this up. With sound knowledge it allows you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Clyde and West Coast Scotland and further afield.

The powerboat scheme commences with LEVEL 2, a basic boat handling and seamanship in a variety of craft, covering both planing and dispacement. The commercial industry are able to operate within 3 miles of land an not more than 3 miles radius from either point of departure or the seaward limit of categorised waters. (Daylight service only).

As student's gain experience they can undertake the following courses:

ADVANCE training, which will improve their skills, develop their handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation up to the standards required to drive a vessel safely by day and night in tidal coastal waters - allowing them to operate within 20 miles from a safe haven. Minimum requirement for categorised waters. It is now advised that candidates are required to have or knowledge up to the Day Skipper (Nb.Yachtmaster Coastal from Sept 2013) prior to taking the advance course

DAY SKIPPER allows a skipper to operate within 20 miles from a nominated departure point in favorably weather and daylight. They must have the Day Skipper theoretical knowledge prior to taking this training.

The RYA/DOT YACHTMASTER COASTAL SKIPPER (Motor) allows an operative to skipper a vessel within 20 miles of a safe haven and at night and up to 80 ton. This is a course for potential skippers and it is assumed that those attending it will be competent at helming with a good knowledge of the theory of navigation and meteorology, and will already have a level of experience approaching that required for the Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence.

The RYA/DOT YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE (Motor) allows a skipper to operate up to 60 miles from a safe haven and up to 200 ton. If accompanied by a Coastal Skipper (Motor) this increases to operate up to 150 miles from a safe haven. No syllabus is set out for a practical course for the Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate. However, we offer courses in preparation for this examination, either to give candidates experience of making longer passages or simply as a refresher course on aspects of boat handling, navigation and seamanship.

The BOATMASTER this is currently under review however, we are carrying out courses that covers the whole syllabus in modules these follow the following criteria which fits it with the MCA REQUIREMENTS for their exams. The modules are navigation, legislation, company policies, m notices for full detail contact John Robertson at our office 01475 520381.

The DECKCRANE TRAINING this is now very much an in house training for companies and they no longer need to complete any training outside their own facilities. The proviso is that as long as there is a competent and qualified person within the company they are more than capable of carrying out in house training for small deck crane operations.
For the larger cranes this is comes under different ruling and as such we can advise further on this please contact John Robertson at our office on 01475 520381

The WORKBOAT STABILITY this is currently under review please contact the office full details 01475 520381 We will be updating this in due course

The COMPETENT DECKHAND This course is designed to complement the requirement for the safe manning of small commercial vessels as set out in annex 3 sections 8 of the Harmonised Code of Practice. The Health and Safety Executive would also acknowledge it as good, safe working practice

FAST TRACK POWER TRAINING
A 13 Week intensive training package for the commerical industry

Seatrek Training’s fast track programme is suitable for complete novices as well as those with previous experience.

As a commercial operator, training staff can be an expensive overhead which can take time to utilise your staff during the early stages of employment, this system gives you the opportunity to develop your employee’s in stages and being able to make use of them from an early time.

We have divided the training into modules so you can either start at the beginning and work your way through to Yachtmaster in one go or you can opt for individual modules depending on your needs. The whole programme takes approx. 13 weeks to complete and we will be running two in 2013

The opportunity to convert sail to power is also available with the mile building weeks in Module 4, an excellent way to build those missing hours and experience.
